Giant Buffet
Have you looked at a book title and were intrigued by the name so much you purchased the book? I hope the title of our lesson today makes you want to read this story. Our story comes from 1 Samuel 17:1-58.
Goliath was a nine-foot Philistine who terrorized and frightened the men of Israel. He loved to fight and challenged the Israeli army to send a man to fight against him. If the man lost, Israel would be a servant to the Philistines. If Goliath lost, the Philistines would be servants to Israel.
David, a shepherd boy, heard the challenge and accepted it. He told King Saul he killed a lion and bear that took a lamb from his father's flock. God delivered him from the lion and bear, and he knew God would save him from the hand of Goliath.
Goliath cursed David and said, come to me, and I will feed you to the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field. So David replied, Thou comest to me with a sword, and a spear, and with a shield. I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. So this day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand, and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth will know there is a God of Israel. And all the assembly will know the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
Goliath came close, David ran toward Goliath. David took a stone from his bag. He loaded his sling and released it into the forehead of the giant. Goliath fell upon his face to the ground. David took Goliath's sword, slew him, and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
This story shows you do not have to be big to be used by God. But, you have to be a willing Vessel and know your help comes from the Lord.
